Artificial Insemination

What is an Artificial Insemination?

Artificial insemination is a low-complexity assisted reproduction procedure indicated for couples where the male has poor seminal quality, alterations in the female’s cervical mucus, or difficulty for the sperm passing through the cervical canal. It can even be performed on couples who, for various reasons, cannot carry out their sexual life. It is important to analyze the couple beforehand, since it is necessary to have certain characteristics of semen and tubal permeability.

Which are the steps for an artificial insemination?

The first step is to use drugs to stimulate the development of the ovarian follicles, which is monitored by serial ultrasounds. When the desired follicular size is reached, semen is capacitated to be deposited in the uterus. You can use your partner’s sperm or a donor’s sperm.

Low complexity treatments

Programmed Coitus

It is the simplest treatment that exists in reproduction. They’re generally called clinic procedures since it is not necessary to use laboratories with advanced technology to perform them.

This treatment is recommended for young couples. Ideally for women under 30 years of age, previously corroborating tubal patency. It is recommended to try this method from 4 to 6 months tops. Since most pregnancies happens in the first months, if there’s no success, it is best to change quickly to a more advanced treatment.

It can be performed naturally by following follicular development by serial vaginal ultrasounds or with ovarian stimulation by means of oral medications to induce follicular growth, force ovulation and increase the chances of pregnancy.
