Bilateral Tubal obstruction, OTB
Definition
- Surgical contraceptive method that consists of bilateral obstruction of the uterine tubes in order to prevent fertilization.
- It works as a mechanical barrier that prevents the interaction of the gametes (egg and sperm).
- It is indicated when the woman has satisfied fertility.
Surgical Options
It can be done
- By laparoscopy.
- Postpartum Umbilical Incision.
- Laparotomy, most of the time being a mini laparotomy.
Indications
Women of childbearing age who are sexually active and want a permanent method of family planning, under the following conditions:
- Who have received extensive counseling prior to its implementation.
- Who have the number of children desired or do not wish to have them.
- That their health condition prevents a pregnancy from being carried to term and puts the mother’s health at risk during pregnancy or delivery.
Effectiveness
- This method provides more than 99% but less than 100% contraceptive protection.
- It is important to clarify that there’s always a chance of failure.
